Decision on Former Government Minister’s Legal Case Scheduled for Monday

Former MP Dean Jonas

A decision is scheduled to be issued on Monday regarding the legal case of Dean Jonas, a former government minister facing charges of assault, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

Attorney George Lake is representing Jonas.

These charges stem from an incident at his Scott’s Hill home in February 2023.

Despite attempts by his legal team to argue that the police lacked jurisdiction to prosecute the case, this claim was rejected by the court last year.

Following the dismissal of the initial claims, the charges against Jonas have been refiled. However, his lawyer, Wendel Alexander, contends that the refiled charges do not effectively constitute a new charge against Jonas.

The case has attracted significant public interest, leading Magistrate Dane Hamilton Jr. to announce that he will deliver his decision in writing next week on whether to dismiss the matter.

The incident at the core of the case revolves around a custody dispute between the former MP for St. George and the mother of one of his children, which ultimately led to an altercation with law enforcement officers after Jonas requested them to leave his property.
