Prime Minister Gaston Browne has commended law enforcement officials in Antigua and Barbuda for what he said is a decrease in criminal activities on the island following carnival.
The country; like many in the Caribbean has been seeing a rise in criminal activities, so much so that the government has been forced to amend laws to increase punishment for crime
In Parliament on Monday, Browne used the opportunity to commend the policemen and other law enforcement personnel for the efforts, saying that criminals seem to be “on the retreat.”
He also highlighted the collaborative response from various stakeholders in addressing crime and violence in the country, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a safe and stable environment for economic progress.
He praised the coordination and cooperation among the government branches in implementing measures to combat crime, including legislative changes to impose stricter penalties on offenders.
Additionally, the Prime Minister expressed concern about the formation of gangs, particularly involving juvenile members who have dropped out of school.
He discussed the challenges faced in identifying and addressing these gangs, citing instances where members refused to remove face masks during meetings.
He specifically mentioned the presence of gangs in various areas and acknowledged that while there has been progress, the issue of gangs has not been fully resolved.
The Prime Minister also touched upon the conflict between two groups, the Grays Farm Killers and 2Drilly, expressing hope for a lasting truce and peace between them.
He highlighted the distressing injuries suffered by gang members and emphasized the government’s commitment to equipping law enforcement with necessary resources to combat crime effectively.
