Government to Tackle Abandoned Properties, Citing Safety Concerns

By Aabigayle McIntosh

The government is once again focusing on the removal of abandoned buildings and houses that have become eyesores and potential hotspots for criminal activity.

The Cabinet has expressed concerns that these properties serve as havens for criminals and drug addicts, who use them to hide weapons.

Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, Lionel Hurst, emphasized that while the government remains committed to addressing the issue, they must proceed cautiously.

“Private property is really sacrosanct and highly regarded, so much so that the courts may intervene if a homeowner makes a claim. This creates some hesitation within the Gaston Browne Administration in moving swiftly in this direction,” Hurst explained.

He assured that broad consultations with stakeholders and the public will take place before any measures are brought to Parliament for approval.
