St. John’s Magistrates’ Court Reopens on High Street
After being out of commission for approximately five years, the St. John’s Magistrates’ Court has finally reopened following extensive renovations.
An opening ceremony was held at the refurbished building this morning, attended by Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin, lawyers, court staff, police officers, and other key stakeholders.
Located at the corner of High Street and Temple Street, the court has been undergoing refurbishment for some time.
Delays in completing the repairs were caused by financial difficulties and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since April 2019, the court has been operating out of a community center.
This temporary relocation followed a December 2018 appeal from workers, who, through their union, highlighted the building’s deteriorated condition and requested a relocation within three months.
Initially, the court staff was moved to the “Knuckle Block” facility, which was intended to be a short-term solution.
However, what was expected to be a six-week stay extended into five years.
Repair work on the High Street building officially commenced in 2021 and has now been completed.
The newly upgraded facility features modern offices and four courtrooms, which will accommodate both District A and District B courts.
