Businesses to pay for Garbage collection as of January 2025
By Aabigayle McIntosh
Businesses will be required to pay a $10 fee per day for the collection of garbage as of January 1, 2025.
This is part of efforts to further streamline finances at the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA)
Chairman of NSWMA Michael Joseph said this was discussed by the government a while back, but was never implemented.
“Because Solid Waste is responsible for the collection of household waste. Nonetheless, the business in St. John’s, because of the fact that it’s central and it’s a city, they’ve just put the garbage out there. And as to ensure health and safety, we’ve taken that responsibility to collect it. But it’s not our responsibility. And so Cabinet have, in 2025, made a policy that there’s going to be a surcharge of $10 per day,” Joseph said.
This is expected to boost revenue at the statutory corporation which is operating on a deficit.
“So this is, of course, going to increase our revenue. And the estimated increase in revenue will be about $100,000 to $120,000 a month. Which would mean that we have increased injection and decreased expenditure,” Joseph said.
It was discussed but never implemented, reason being they didn’t know how to do so. This was a plan of the UPP hence why they didn’t know ‘the know how’ to get it down.
Now that alp is overrun with UPP members who are knowledgeable on how to get certain things done there will be sensible things done in this country.
You guys are welcome in advance!
Thanks to UPP… putting people first.
As the PM continues to shovel our tax dollars into the abyss with his miscreant financial adventures somebody ultimately has to make up the shortfall. This week it’s the business owners. Next week it might be you.
