Redonda Celebrates One Year as Largest Marine Protected Area in the Region

By Aabigayle McIntosh

A year has officially passed since Redonda was designated as a protected area, making it the largest marine protected area in the region.

The island’s unique ecosystem and wildlife have been a focal point for conservation efforts led by the Environmental Awareness Group (EAG).

Redonda ecosystem coordinator, Janella Bradshaw, emphasized that the island’s preservation should be a matter of national concern, with the aim of making it a symbol of national pride.

To mark the anniversary, the EAG is organizing a week of activities to update the public on the island’s developments and ongoing conservation efforts.

Throughout the past year, the group has actively raised awareness, particularly among young people.

Bradshaw highlighted their work in schools, such as a reading session at St. John’s Lutheran with grade four students, where they discussed a book about Redonda and linked it to the island’s conservation story and its importance.

Redonda is home to numerous nesting seabirds, including three different types of boobies, making it a vital habitat for wildlife in the region.

The EAG has also partnered with international organizations and the National Parks Authority to establish a marine research monitoring plan.

This five-year plan will focus on key conservation areas to protect and study the island’s diverse marine life.
