Antigua Barbuda EMS Academy Launches New Cohort of Emergency Medical Technician Training Program)

19 October 2024 - 06:40

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Social Transformation, and the Environment, in collaboration with Antigua and Barbuda Emergency Medical Services (ABEMS) Training Unit, is proud to announce the commencement of a new cohort of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training, carried out by the ABEMS Academy.

This vital program, hosted at the Glansville Polyclinics, began in October and will continue through to early February 2025. Thirteen dedicated students are currently enrolled in this intensive course, which will prepare them to become certified Basic EMTs.

Upon successful completion, graduates will be certified to provide life-saving care in pre-hospital settings and will be eligible to apply for positions in various sectors, including hotels, schools, fire services, ABEMS, and airports. The training ensures that the new EMTs will operate within the scope of practice for Basic EMTs, meeting the highest standards of emergency medical care. Having more EMTs available throughout the country directly reduces the risks of morbidity and mortality by enabling faster and more effective emergency response.

The Honorable Sir Molwyn Joseph, Minister of Health, Wellness, Social Transformation, and the Environment, emphasized the significance of this initiative:

“This program represents a critical investment in the future of healthcare in Antigua and Barbuda. By training more Emergency Medical Technicians, we are strengthening our healthcare system’s ability to respond to medical emergencies, safeguarding the lives of our citizens and visitors alike. Our government is committed to developing a resilient and well-prepared healthcare workforce that can meet the growing demands of our nation. This investment is not just in individuals but in the overall well-being of our people and communities.”

The ABEMS Academy’s training program highlights the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to expanding healthcare access, improving emergency response capabilities, and ensuring that Antigua and Barbuda remains a regional leader in healthcare services.
