Antigua’s Heart & Stroke Foundation Promotes Prevention on World Stroke Day

The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Antigua and Barbuda is marking World Stroke Day on October 29 with a powerful message of prevention and hope, while announcing plans for its upcoming annual symposium.

Under the global theme “#GreaterThanStroke,” the Foundation is emphasizing that stroke is both preventable and treatable through proper awareness and lifestyle modifications.

“As we observe World Stroke Day, the Foundation encourages individuals to take charge of their health,” said Dr. Georgette Meade, Consultant Cardiologist and Foundation President. “Simple lifestyle changes – such as increasing physical activity, reducing fast food consumption, eating more fruits and vegetables, and lowering your salt intake – can dramatically reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease.”

The Foundation is building on the success of its previous initiatives, including the 5th Annual Cardiac Symposium held in February 2024, which attracted over 190 participants. During that event, Dr. Gaden Osborne, Consultant Neurologist at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, highlighted the importance of primordial prevention.

“By encouraging healthy behaviours like proper diet, regular physical activity, and maintaining wellness in those without existing risk factors, we can significantly reduce the likelihood of stroke,” Dr. Osborne noted.

Looking ahead, the Foundation has announced its 6th Annual Cardiac Symposium, scheduled for February 16, 2025, at Sandals Grande Resort & Spa. The upcoming event will explore the theme “Navigating Modern Health: Technology, Mental Well-being, Stroke & Cardiac Care” and will feature presentations on:
