Kenisha Whyte, the valedictorian and top student of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus Lifelong Learning Unit’s 2024 graduating class, is celebrating her achievements and expressing gratitude to all who supported her and her fellow graduates.
Whyte, a resident of His Majesty’s Prison (HMP), has excelled through UWI’s Seeds of Hope Programme, which offers inmates scholarships to pursue courses at the Lifelong Learning Unit.
Established in 2021, this initiative aims to provide educational opportunities and support rehabilitation for those within the prison system.
In her recent graduation speech, Whyte reflected on the unique challenges of studying with limited time while managing her responsibilities at HMP.
She also spoke to the stigma surrounding educational opportunities for inmates, emphasizing the power of education in transforming lives.
“I am a symbol of transformation, resilience, and the power of education to change one’s path in life,” Whyte declared. “As a proud representative of the students of His Majesty’s Prison, this achievement is not only my own but is shared with my fellow students.”
She praised the courses for being “a beacon of hope, a sanctuary of knowledge, and a place of redemption,” highlighting how she and her peers endured limited study hours, moments of self-doubt, and ultimately achieved academic and personal growth.
Whyte credited the Lifelong Learning Unit, Seeds of Hope Programme, and prison officials for their commitment to providing educational pathways for inmates.
“By believing in education as a pathway to redemption, the prison is actively participating in empowering us to contribute meaningfully to society once we leave these walls,” she said.
“The staff and administration have created an environment that fosters growth and learning, demonstrating a vision that extends beyond punishment to true rehabilitation. This commitment to education helps break cycles of recidivism and equips us to build a better future.”
This year, 16 HMP residents graduated on October 31. Dr. Curtis Charles, Director of Academic Affairs, praised the graduates, saying, “Today, you are in the arena. You’ve dared to take on new knowledge, face the unknown, and accomplish something meaningful.”
He encouraged them to persevere despite challenges, emphasizing the importance of growth and resilience.
Executive Director of the Lifelong Learning Unit, Paula C.M. Lee, commended the graduates on their achievements.
She noted that 346 awardees received Certificates of Proficiency this year, and one student, Brittney Gomes, received the Harvard Credential of Readiness.
Whyte distinguished herself with top performance in Cyber Security, Strategic Human Resource Management, and an overall 94% average.
“Our students are champions in education,” Lee remarked. “Today’s award ceremony is testimony that success is achievable through agility and resilience.”
