PM Browne leads delegation to COP29 in Azerbaijan

The annual Conference of the Parties, widely known as COP, is set to convene its 29th conference in Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22, 2024.

This significant event, held under the auspices of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), gathers representatives from around the world to discuss urgent climate issues and forge collaborative strategies to combat climate change.

Leading the delegation from Antigua and Barbuda is Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who emphasizes the vital importance of this gathering for small island nations.

As the conference progresses, the delegation aims to engage in meaningful dialogue centered on innovative and equitable financial solutions crucial for addressing the climate crisis.

Their advocacy will focus on enhancing international cooperation to foster a low-carbon, sustainable future that benefits all nations, particularly those most vulnerable to climate impacts.

COP29 is particularly noteworthy as it has been dubbed the “Finance COP,” drawing attention to the essential role that financial resources play in bridging the gap between global climate ambitions and real-world actions.

A primary objective for this year’s summit is to negotiate the establishment of a New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for climate finance. This initiative seeks to surpass the existing commitment of $100 billion per year and aims to mobilize additional resources dedicated to bolstering climate adaptation and resilience, especially in regions that are especially susceptible to climate-related challenges.

The delegation accompanying Prime Minister Browne is composed of key figures committed to the fight against climate change.

This includes Tumasie Blair, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations, alongside Climate Change Ambassador Ruleta Camacho, and Diann Black-Layne, the Director of the Department of Environment. They are further supported by technical experts from the Department of Environment: Arry Simon, Gita Gardner, and Garth Simon. Additionally, AOSIS Fellow Carlon Knight lends his expertise to the delegation.

The diverse backgrounds and experiences of these individuals demonstrate Antigua and Barbuda’s strong commitment to advocating for critical climate finance solutions that address the pressing needs of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The discussions at COP29 will be pivotal, as they not only address financial mechanisms to tackle climate change but also emphasize the importance of equity and accessibility in climate finance.

The government of Antigua and Barbuda recognizes that achieving a sustainable and resilient future requires collaborative efforts and resource mobilization that are fair and just.

Their participation at this international forum reiterates their determination to push for ambitious climate commitments and actions that will ultimately benefit not just their nation, but the global community as a whole.
