Several Caribbean islands including Antigua and Barbuda are under high surf advisories as meteorological officials warn of hazardous wave conditions that could persist until mid-week, potentially threatening coastal areas and beachgoers.
The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued an advisory for Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, and the British Virgin Islands. The advisory specifically highlights risks along northern and north-facing coastlines, where waves are expected to reach heights of 6 to 10 feet.
While St. Kitts, Nevis, and Montserrat face threats until Sunday midday, and Antigua’s advisory extends through Sunday afternoon, both Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands must remain vigilant from Saturday midday until Wednesday evening. Barbuda’s warning period matches the latter, running from Saturday afternoon through Wednesday evening.
Officials warn that strong rip currents accompanying these high waves pose significant risks to swimmers. Additional concerns include potential coastal flooding and beach erosion, with low-lying coastal roads vulnerable to sea spray and wave splash-over.
Safety recommendations for the public include:
- Swimming only at beaches with lifeguard presence
- Choosing sheltered, south-facing beaches
- Avoiding exposed rocks and jetties
- If caught in a rip current, remaining calm and floating rather than fighting the current
- Swimming parallel to shore to escape rip currents
- Signaling for help when necessary if unable to escape
