The highly anticipated presentation of the National Budget for 2025 is set to take place this Thursday.
In the lead-up to this significant event, Prime Minister Gaston Browne is offering the public a glimpse into the strategic directions his government plans to take.
In a notable announcement, Prime Minister Browne has assured citizens that there will be no new taxes levied in the upcoming budget.
This decision comes despite the fact that Antigua and Barbuda currently maintains one of the lowest tax-to-GDP ratios in the Caribbean. The government aims to support economic growth without imposing additional financial burdens on the population.
A key highlight of the budget will be the prime minister’s commendation of Antigua and Barbuda’s impressive fiscal achievements.
He will outline how the nation has successfully reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio from a staggering 104 percent in 2014 to an estimated 60 percent by 2024, marking the lowest level within the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union.
The budget will also prioritize significant upgrades to the nation’s road infrastructure. Prime Minister Browne plans to emphasize the ongoing improvements to major highways, some of which have already been completed while others are still underway.
To bolster these efforts, the government has earmarked $20 million for the acquisition of heavy-duty equipment essential for advancing the road development program.
In addition to infrastructure, the government is committed to addressing the pressing water supply challenges faced by citizens.
The Prime Minister has pledged that by August of next year, Antigua and Barbuda will achieve full water production capacity, alleviating long-standing concerns about access to this vital resource.
Furthermore, notable successes will be spotlighted, including the procurement of seven new fire trucks, enhancements to the National Solid Waste Management Authority, and the planned expansion of the Barbuda runway, reflecting the government’s dedication to improving essential services and infrastructure.
“We have had a good year, and we desire to share this positive news with the population,” stated PM Browne.
He will also discuss the government’s initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurship among its citizens, enhancing public services, and driving infrastructural development—all designed to promote sustainable growth and improve the well-being of the nation.
You are on the right part my beloved Prime Minister and ,with God’s help, our twin island nation will be the mecca of the entire Caribbean. Our people will live way above the poverty level fostered by gainful employment and entrepreneurship along with the best healthcare and infrastructure. So Sir, Keep on fighting the good fight for our beloved Antigua and Barbuda.
It’s great to hear that the Prime Minister is planning to present the National Budget for 2025 and that he’s giving the public some insight into what to expect. It’s particularly reassuring to know there won’t be any new taxes, especially since many people are already feeling the financial strain.
Reducing the debt-to-GDP ratio so significantly from 104 percent to around 60 percent is impressive. It really shows progress and indicates that the government is taking fiscal responsibility seriously. That said, it’ll be interesting to see how they plan to support economic growth moving forward without imposing new taxes. Overall, I’m looking forward to hearing more details on Thursday!
