The Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda presented prestigious service awards to four distinguished citizens at a ceremony held Thursday, 5 December 2024.
The awards recognised exceptional contributions in arts, culture and humanitarian work.
Howard Allen GOH and Mitzi Allen each received the Governor General’s Faithful and Meritorious Service Award for their contributions to arts and cultural development.
Howard Allen, awarded The Cross, was honoured for his pioneering filmmaking work, including directing “The Sweetest Mango”, the Eastern Caribbean’s first indigenous feature film.
Mitzi Allen received The Gold Medal for her groundbreaking work in broadcast journalism and film production through HAMA In., where she has produced numerous works celebrating Caribbean identity.
Mary John was presented with The Silver Medal for Community and Charitable Work in Social Transformation. Following her own journey to sobriety in 2003, John established the Mary John Transformation of Lives Incorporated Foundation, supporting individuals struggling with addiction and homelessness. Her work was previously recognised with the Sandals World Humanitarian Day Award in 2023.
The Halo Hero Humanitarian Award was bestowed upon John Jacob Oakland Lloyd Swift II for his dedication to community service. Swift, who works as a driver and heavy-duty equipment operator, was recognised for his humanitarian efforts and ongoing contributions to his community.
The awards ceremony was presided over by His Excellency, Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, along with Lady Williams, The Governor General’s Goodwill Emissary.
