Prime Minister Gaston Browne emphasized that his government is committed to continuing the legacy of the late Father of the Nation, Sir V.C. Bird, by enhancing economic and social benefits for the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda.

Speaking at the annual VC Bird Day ceremony on Lower Market Street, PM Browne addressed a large crowd celebrating Sir V.C. Bird’s impactful life, noting the enduring admiration for him even twenty-five years after his passing.

He described Sir V.C. Bird as a remarkable hero, who made the most significant contributions to the socio-economic development of the nation, distinguishing himself above all others.

PM Browne expressed his disappointment that political opponents do not honor Sir Vere’s contributions on this designated day of remembrance, indicating their disrespect.

The prime minister recalled how the UPP Administration had previously replaced VC Bird Day with National Heroes Day, a change that the ABLP opposed. Upon regaining power in 2014, they reinstated VC Bird Day as a holiday.

He remarked on the importance of celebrating Sir V.C. Bird’s legacy to motivate current and future generations toward greater accomplishments, highlighting his self-taught wisdom and courage. PM Browne disagreed with those suggesting that higher education is necessary to emulate Sir VC Bird’s success.

ABLP Chairman E.P. Chet Greene also addressed the audience, acknowledging VC Bird’s role in transforming Antigua and Barbuda from a sugar-based economy to one diversified by tourism.

He pointed out Bird’s commitment to education, which has made free primary and secondary schooling a right today and laid the foundation for the introduction of tertiary education.

Greene praised Bird for modernizing infrastructure by paving roads, building homes, and constructing the airport named after him, which connects Antigua and Barbuda to the world.
