Jay-Z fights back after lawsuit accuses him alongside “Diddy” Combs of the historic rape of a 13-year-old (The Irish Times)

by Mick the Ram

US rapper Jay-Z has hit back at a lawsuit which alleges that he, along with Sean “P Diddy” Combs, drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl at a party back in the year 2000.

The accuser, who for now remains anonymous and therefore can only be identified as “Jane Doe”, alleges that she was assaulted at a house party after the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA’s) in New York.

Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, dismissed the legal action as a “blackmail attempt” and pointed the finger at a lawyer named Tony Buzbee, who he believes has gambled that he could manipulate a settlement to escape public scrutiny.

The 55-year-old who is married to Beyoncé and has three children, insisted that the lawsuit – which was originally filed in October, and was refiled 8 December to list Mr Carter as a defendant – has had the exact opposite effect and vowed not to pay a single penny.

Mr Combs who is currently in jail awaiting trial after being charged in September with sex-trafficking and other offences, also denied these latest accusation.

His legal team said the amended lawsuit was the latest in a series of “shameless publicity stunts, designed to extract payments from celebrities who fear having lies spread about them.”

Same lawyer behind many of the lawsuits

The legal action was filed under New York’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act, by Texas-based lawyer, Tony Buzbee.

It is Mr Buzbee who has filed several lawsuits in recent months accusing Mr Combs of assault and rape, with in each case the names of the victims withheld.

He is due to face a criminal trial on 5 May.

Jay-Z makes blackmail claim

For Shawn Carter, being revealed as the unidentified male celebrity – alongside Mr Combs – responsible for the alleged sexual assault and rape, prompted an angry response.

He accused Mr Buzbee of a clear attempt at blackmail through a demand letter, but retaliated by announcing that instead of pushing him into submission it actually motivated him to “expose” Mr Buzbee as “the fraud you are in a VERY public fashion”, adding: “I will not give you ONE RED PENNY!!”

Challenge made

Mr Carter went on to say he found the allegations “so heinous in nature” that he implored Buzbee to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one, because in his words: “Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away.”

His attorneys claim the rapper has been a “target” of Buzbee’s “extortionate campaign” which cynically has been calculated to force a defendant to pay X millions of dollars, irrespective of the truth.

Difficult conversations ahead

The clearly aggrieved Jay-Z turned his attention to the effect it will have on his family, describing it as heartbreaking.

My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people,” he said with a mixture of frustration and vexation.

Hoping to ensure a favourable outcome, his legal team requested to put the case before U.S. District Judge Jessica G. L. Clarke, who recently ruled in another of the many cases against Combs, that a 17-year-old who made an accusation that he and two other men had gang raped her back in 2003, could not proceed anonymously.

Accusation of rape

The Jane Doe accuser, who filed her original complaint in October, claimed that she wanted to attend the Video Music Awards in 2000 and had a friend drop her off near Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan.

She alleges that she met a driver who told her that he worked for Combs and he took her to an after-party. She claims she was then drugged and feeling dizzy she lay down in a room which shortly afterwards was visited by both Mr Combs and Mr Carter along with a female celebrity, described in the lawsuit as Celebrity B.

She says the men took turns in assaulting her, while the female celebrity watched on. Mr Carter is accused of holding her down and raping her, before Mr Combs allegedly did the same.

No let up for “Diddy”

For Sean “Diddy” Combs the claims just keep coming whilst he awaits trial. Only last week a further accusation was made through a lawsuit which suggests that he dangled a woman from the 17th-floor balcony of an apartment during an altercation.

It has been filed by fashion designer Bryana “Bana” Bongolan, who alleges the incident happened in 2016 while she was at the home of Mr Combs’ then-girlfriend Casandra “Cassie” Ventura.

Dangled over a balcony

She claims that Mr Combs started shouting and banging on the front door and after entering the property he allegedly confronted Ms Bongolan, who was on the balcony at the time.

The lawsuit states he allegedly grabbed and molested her before lifting her up and dangling her over the edge. After intervention by Ms Ventura he is said to have slammed her onto patio furniture.

A representative for the rapper denied the allegations and observed that anyone has the right to file a lawsuit, regardless of the evidence they may or may not have.”
