Ministry of Aviation Strengthens Regional Focus with New Initiatives

The Ministry of Aviation has announced a series of strategic initiatives to enhance coordination among stakeholders at the nation’s airports.

Central to this effort is the establishment of a National Facilitation Committee, designed to improve collaboration and streamline processes critical to the aviation sector.

Charles Fernandez, the minister responsible for that ministry, says as part of ongoing efforts to solidify Antigua and Barbuda’s status as an aviation hub in the Caribbean, the Ministry is also actively working on air services agreements.

These agreements are essential for reinforcing the role of VC Bird International Airport as a key regional aviation hub in the eastern Caribbean, fostering increased connectivity and economic growth.

A significant focus of the Ministry is on the training and development of air traffic controllers, ensuring the safety and efficiency of air travel.

Currently, 10 new air traffic control assistants are receiving training, supported by contracts for 7 individuals presently training in Trinidad. This initiative aims to bolster the department’s national and international capabilities in air traffic management.

Additionally, the Ministry continues to support ongoing efforts of LIAT2020, aiding its resurgence as a leading authority in Caribbean aviation. This includes regular communication with regional partners for information sharing and collaboration with the Ministry of Legal Affairs to navigate any legal and operational challenges.

These measures are crucial for ensuring a smooth transition of services as the aviation industry in the region adapts and evolves.

The Ministry’s commitment to these initiatives is expected to strengthen the aviation sector’s resilience and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers, promoting Antigua and Barbuda as a premier destination in the Caribbean.
