2024: A Year of Unprecedented Achievements and Record-Breaking Moments

Prime Minister Gaston Browne

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has reflected on Antigua and Barbuda’s achievements in 2024, telling the nation it was a remarkable year.

As confirmed by the World Bank, PM Browne reminded us that Antigua & Barbuda enjoyed growth of six percent in 2024, expanding our economy to $6B.

This expansion was represented by economic expansion in every sector, including agriculture, and increased climate resilience.

“In 2024, we shattered records and made history. Through the collective efforts of our people, we welcomed 1.1 million visitors to our shores, breaking the previous record we set ourselves in 2019,” he said.

He said Covid stymied the achievements nevertheless, resilience and upward trajectory prevailed.

“From here, barring natural disasters or another pandemic, or military conflict, we are poised for even greater achievements. On December 21st, an unprecedented 51 flights landed at V.C. Bird International Airport; a spectacular display evidencing our growing prominence.

He said this included 13 international flights, 35 regional flights, and 3 private charters.

Meanwhile, Barbuda’s newly opened airport welcomed many private jets carrying high-net-worth visitors, positioning Barbuda as a marque luxury destination.

“Barbuda was a recognized as one of Frommers “Best Places to go in 2025” highlighting its charm and tranquility and the fact that it has emerged as a one of the most sought-after luxury destinations for the world’s wealthiest individuals”, PM Browne said

However, Browne said the prosperity enjoyed by residents was not always so.

“In 2014, when my administration assumed office, our country had just one daily flight from American Airlines, which the former UPP administration subsidized to keep in service. Today, American Airlines operates four daily flights: two from Miami, one from New York, and one from Charlotte—without subsidies,” he said.

He added that other carriers, including Delta, JetBlue, United, Virgin Atlantic, and British Airways, have strengthened our connectivity with the world, solidifying our reputation as a global hub for tourism.

“All of this was the result of our administration’s high-performance culture, driven by its diligence, entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial acumen, and creativity, on behalf of our people,” he added.
