The Mylne 65 “The Blue Peter” won the 16th Annual Nelson’s Pursuit Race in Antigua on New Year’s Eve, leading a fleet of over 30 vessels in the historic revival race.
The event, which recreates Lord Nelson’s pursuit of the French fleet in 1805, raised over $10,000 for Saint John’s Hospice, supporting their palliative care services in Antigua.
Following tradition, boats started at staggered times based on their handicaps, with slower vessels carrying the French flag departing first, followed by the “British” fleet in pursuit. The race began outside English Harbour near Fort Charlotte.
The Blue Peter’s victory in optimal sailing conditions continues the event’s tradition of combining competitive sailing with charitable giving. This pursuit race has become a significant fixture in Antigua’s maritime calendar, traditionally concluding with a prize-giving ceremony at Nelson’s Dockyard.
The hospice association of Antigua Barbuda is a foundation that takes care of terminally ill patients offering them some degree of comfort by easing their pain. The donation is quite timely.
