Mandatory Time-Off for Voters: ABEC Issues Reminder to Employers

7 January 2025 - 07:03

The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) is reminding all employers of their obligations on the upcoming by-election day in the St. Peter constituency, next Tuesday.

In a recent notice, ABEC highlighted the provisions outlined in the Representation of the People Amendment Act.

This legislation mandates that every employer must grant their employees a minimum of four consecutive hours to participate in the voting process.

Employers are reminded that this time off must be provided without any deductions from the employees’ salaries or wages during the specified period.

This initiative aims to ensure that every eligible voter can exercise their democratic right without the pressure of work obligations.

As ABEC intensifies its preparations for the January 14 election, the focus remains on filling the vacancy in the St. Peter constituency following the unexpected passing of the former representative, Asot Michael.

This by-election is a critical opportunity for constituents to select a new leader, and the Electoral Commission is committed to facilitating a fair and accessible voting process for all.
