Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney

Atlee Rodney, the Commissioner of Police, emphasized the critical need for improved conflict resolution skills within the community during his annual press conference, where he discussed the police force’s performance over the past year.

He pointed out that the underlying issues contributing to much of the crime in the country stem from unresolved conflicts.

Looking ahead to 2024, Commissioner Rodney highlighted that the police will be addressing a higher volume of criminal activities compared to the previous year. While some crime categories have seen a decrease, others have unfortunately increased.

Delving deeper into the issue, he noted a troubling pattern: many reported incidents of crime are rooted in a failure to effectively manage conflict.

The commissioner stressed the importance of the community’s role in tackling this issue to help protect young lives.

Rodney provided specific examples, stating that cases of malicious damage—such as to properties or vehicles—often arise from domestic conflicts. He pointed out that many incidents of wounding and even some homicides can likewise be traced back to domestic disputes.

To address this pressing challenge, Commissioner Rodney is advocating for a collective effort within society, particularly aimed at teaching young people how to resolve their differences peacefully.

He shared that the murder rate has seen a slight rise in 2024, with 12 reported cases compared to 10 in 2023. Out of the twelve, six cases lead to arrests and charges, while six remain unresolved.

In a bid to enhance their investigative capabilities, the police have sought assistance from Scotland Yard to help navigate these complex issues.
