Antigua and Barbuda Strengthens Alliance with Brazil
Antigua and Barbuda is eager to deepen its ties with Brazil, as Prime Minister Gaston Browne highlighted during a recent meeting with a high-level delegation led by Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Luiz Vieira.
The discussions emphasized both countries’ commitment to enhancing their diplomatic and economic relations.
Prime Minister Browne acknowledged Brazil’s prominent position in South America as a powerhouse with significant global influence, particularly through its participation in BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).
He pointed out that both nations share core values, including support for democracy and social equity.
Notably, Antigua and Barbuda was the first country in the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to join the Hunger Initiative introduced by Brazilian President Lula, whom Browne praised for his dedication to ensuring fair wealth distribution.
Browne expressed the importance of these principles to Antigua and Barbuda, a small developing nation that aspires to contribute to global equity and uplift all people.
Echoing this sentiment, Foreign Minister Vieira highlighted President Lula’s commitment to strengthening ties with Caribbean nations, focusing on trade, cooperation, and political dialogue.
He expressed enthusiasm about Antigua and Barbuda’s participation in the Global Initiative Against Hunger and Poverty, assuring that President Lula is pleased with this alignment.
Vieira also mentioned that Brazil is set to host the upcoming annual meeting of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and extended a personal invitation to PM Browne to attend.
This meeting aims to gather Caribbean leaders in Brasilia, signaling Brazil’s interest in fostering closer collaboration within the region.
