Jernya Oscar Laid to Rest

Jernya Oscar, a 23-year-old former national footballer from Antigua who was tragically killed alongside two others in a car accident in Florida on December 16, was buried in Antigua yesterday.

The accident happened near Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred as Mr. Oscar and the other victims were standing beside their vehicles, discussing a minor collision, when they were struck by a passing car. All three individuals were transported to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries.

Mr. Oscar had recently graduated from Florida International University and was beginning to carve out a successful career, having secured positions at Grant Thornton and later as a manager at Amazon.

His uncle, Member of Parliament Anthony Smith, described him as “a humble young man” and expressed the deep sorrow his family feels over this loss.

Mr. Oscar, who proudly represented Antigua and Barbuda in football, is remembered fondly as a talented and dedicated individual with immense potential.

His funeral was well attended and members of Cabinet and other top officials attended

Meanwhile, in a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, the Cabinet convened briefly Wednesday, to express condolences to Smith

The Cabinet members acknowledged the profound impact of this tragedy on Minister Smith and his family.

In light of the circumstances, the meeting was truncated to allow members to attend the funeral service.
