Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez
In an insightful analysis of the current international trade landscape, Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez shared his optimism regarding the local tourism sector’s ability to thrive, even in the face of tariffs imposed by the United States on its trading partners, including Mexico, Canada, and China.
The recent 25 percent tariffs on goods entering the United States have raised concerns about rising prices for American consumers and the potential impact on travel expenditures.
Minister Fernandez noted, “When these tariffs take effect, it is expected that there will be a direct concern for the economic future of our source market in the United States. Unfortunately, during turbulent times, travel is often perceived as a luxury that consumers may be inclined to forgo.”
However, Fernandez emphasized that high-end tourism in Antigua and Barbuda is likely to remain resilient in light of these challenges.
“High-end travelers demonstrate a resilience to external shocks that lower-end markets may not possess,” he stated. “Our status as a premier high-end destination positions us favorably during these uncertain times, but it is imperative that we maintain top-tier service standards for our guests.”
To uphold the high-quality services expected by luxury travelers, the minister announced ongoing collaborations with the Antigua and Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute (ABHTI). These initiatives aim to cultivate a skilled workforce able to meet the demands of high-end tourism.
Additionally, discussions are underway with the University of the West Indies Financing and Investment Committee (UWI FIC) to further enhance the skills of local hospitality professionals.
Fernandez also revealed fruitful discussions with the Ambassador of Ireland regarding the potential implementation of training programs for hospitality workers through exchange programs and specialized short courses.
