Thriving at Every Age in the Fight Against Cancer
At 90 years young, Miriam Samuel embodies the power of resilience, wisdom, and well-being. On World Cancer Day, she embraces the theme “United by Unique”, recognizing that while everyone’s cancer journey is personal, no one fights alone.
As the eldest of 12 chefs featured in the 2025 Medical Benefits Scheme Wellness Calendar, Grandma Mirie champions healthy aging and disease prevention. Her kombucha recipe, rich in antioxidants and probiotics, reflects her belief in nourishing both body and mind at every stage of life. While not a cure, kombucha may support gut health and combat oxidative stress, which is important for overall health, especially the immune system. However, she encourages cancer patients to consult their doctors before consuming kombucha.
“Aging is not about slowing down—it’s about growing wiser, stronger, and more intentional with how we care for ourselves and others. In the fight against cancer, every story, every challenge, and every triumph is part of a greater purpose. When we share our collective strength, we inspire healing.” — Grandma Mirie.
In her book, Mirie’s Magic Recipe: Loving, Leading, Legacy, she compares kombucha making to lifelong learning—a journey of growth, adaptability and purpose. Just as kombucha ferments into something rich and beneficial over time, she believes that life experiences shape us into vessels of wisdom and wellness.
On World Kombucha Day (February 21), Grandma Mirie will celebrate vitality and culture at Julee’s on Cross and Tanner Streets. Join her FREE Kombucha Tasting & Making Class, starting with a Kombucha Happy Hour at 5:00 PM. Experience the vibrant flavors of mango, guava, sorrel, pineapple, ginger, and passion fruit in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Learn the art of brewing kombucha and embrace a lifestyle of longevity and wellness. Classes are free, and starter kits are available for $50.
This World Cancer Day, let’s celebrate the strength in our stories of healing, the wisdom of experience, and the power of community. Aging well isn’t just about adding years—it’s about making every year count.
