Antigua and Barbuda Advocates for CARICOM Vaccine Fund Amid WHO Withdrawal Concerns

6 February 2025 - 06:34

The Cabinet has announced plans to present an enabling resolution at the upcoming CARICOM Heads of Government meeting.

The resolution aims to encourage member states to establish a special fund dedicated to vaccine procurement.

This proposal’s urgency follows the current U.S. Administration’s decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Officials warn that this withdrawal will disproportionately affect small nations, leaving them vulnerable in the event of future global health crises.

As access to life-saving vaccines and essential medications becomes increasingly restricted to purchase-only options, Caribbean leaders are rallying to secure resources for their populations.

The United States has historically been a significant contributor to WHO funding, and its exit could catalyze challenges for smaller states in accessing vital health supplies, amidst fears of future pandemics.

Antigua and Barbuda’s initiative highlights the need for regional solidarity and preparedness in addressing health threats.

As discussions unfold at the CARICOM summit, leaders will face the critical task of formulating strategies that ensure the health and safety of their communities in a rapidly changing global landscape
