Cabinet Expands Vehicle Licensing Fees to Support Road Repairs

15 February 2025 - 08:07

The Cabinet announced that the government will increase licensing fees for various types of vehicles, including buses, cars, and trucks, to help fund significant road repairs.

Initially, the focus was on raising fees primarily for heavy-duty trucks and earth-moving equipment. Still, Ambassador Lionel Hurst, the Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister’s Office, clarified yesterday that the fee hike will now apply to nearly all vehicles, with the sole exception being tractors.

Hurst explained that tractors are rarely used on roads, as there are only about 100 registered, and they primarily serve agricultural functions.

He stressed the importance of establishing a special fund to ensure that those who contribute to road wear and tear also contribute to their upkeep.

“There’s no need to increase the burden on farmers,” he mentioned while emphasizing that those who operate cars, trucks, buses, and heavy equipment will play a role in funding road maintenance.
