Residents are being encouraged to participate in the upcoming Caribe Wave Tsunami Exercise.

The Caribe Wave Tsunami Exercise is an international exercise hosted each year for persons to test their readiness regarding a tsunami.

“We are asking persons to look at their disaster plans, pull out that aspect that deal with tsunami response and to act it out as if you got a real from us, from the Met Office saying that there is a tsunami to Antigua and Barbuda.

“By now, everybody should have a disaster plan and if you don’t have, it’s not too late to ensure you have one. So, this exercise is geared to test our national response towards a tsunami should it happen,” Anderson Tuitt, Training and Response Manager from the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) explained.

Schools and a few businesses usually participate but the NODS official is imploring homeowners to also take part so that they can be aware of the proper practices especially if you live in low-lying areas.

The safe areas in town are anywhere from the East of Independence Drive. This includes the Antigua Recreation Grounds and onwards.

The St. John’s Cathedral is also a safe area.

The exercise will take place on March 20th at 11 am.

It is conducted by the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and coordinated through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

Residents can register for the event by calling 462-4206 or via email at [email protected] .

  1. Antiguans on the whole have an attitude of not taking anything seriously until it’s too late. They never believe it’s going to happen here until it does… God forbid
