V.C Bird International Airport

AECON Construction submitted a bid of US$47 million, covering improvements not only to the runway but also to taxiways and the apron. Essential work is also planned for Runway #10 and the Fixed Base Operator (FBO) facility servicing private jets.

Williams mentioned that initial work has started on the parking and taxi areas for private jets, which includes installing concrete slabs as part of broader infrastructure improvements approved by the Cabinet.

The government has secured a loan aimed at funding substantial upgrades for the VC Bird International Airport, and a portion of these funds is likely to be allocated for the runway extension at the new Barbuda International Airport.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has expressed a desire for the runway upgrades at VCBIA and the Barbuda International Airport extension to proceed concurrently, ensuring comprehensive improvements to the nation’s air travel infrastructure.

This project promises to elevate the operational capacity of one of the Caribbean’s key airports, paving the way for increased air traffic and enhanced service for travelers.

As the timeline for construction unfolds, airport officials and the public alike are eager for the positive changes on the horizon.

You mean there were no firms available locally to do the work? We had to go all the way to CANADA? OKKKKKKKKKKK

Jah…It’s disappointing to hear or even read about the runway and parking apron upgrades at VC Bird International Airport being awarded to AECON Construction. So Why go with a Canadian firm when there are plenty of local companies that could have done the job? Even in the region like DA or Trinidad…It feels like a missed opportunity to support our own economy and workforce. Plus, I hope they can actually deliver on their promises—so many projects run into delays and budget overruns; it’s hard to be optimistic.

      Seriously Guys (n Gals)…???
Why are we always soo emotional/sentimental and instant experts?

      1. The Contract could Only be awarded to a company that actually submitted a Bid. Did any local or regional firms do such?

      2. The Airport must remain operational on a daily basis. Does any of these ‘home grown’ institutions have the expertise or experience to execute such precision works each & everyday?

      3. Specific & specialized equipment/machinery will also be required to properly mobilize and produce the highest quality & guaranteed dependability. Or, do we prefer the frequent re-patching & repairs like on the Friars Hill & Airport Roads???

One can only wait and see with some hope thrown in. You talk about sourcing local talent from maybe Trinidad , but you forgetting what the Trinidadians did to our roads. St the same time, I think it was the Canadians who built our new airport from the old Coolidge

How strange that they didn’t give that job to the Chinese.
