Bidding process for airport runway expansion underway

V.C Bird International Airport (Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association)

As plans surge forward for the development of the VC Bird International Airport, the bidding process is now open for contractors to extend the runway at the airport.

According to Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez, the contract will be around US $40 to $45 million.

Fernandez emphasized the importance of getting the job properly and in a timely manner to ensure the safety of passengers and staff at the VC Bird International Airport.

“We can’t afford an accident. You can’t put a price on safety,” Fernandez said.

In addition to that, several Antiguans and Barbudans will travel to Spain to undergo training for the radar used at the airport.

Seven air traffic controllers are presently being trained in Trinidad.

Fernandez was speaking in Parliament on Thursday.

The equipment was recently upgraded at a cost of over $3.5 million euros.
