A specific timeline for the reopening of the Cancer Centre has still not been made.
According to Prime Minister Gaston Browne while speaking in Parliament delays are ongoing due to the fact the purchasing and arrival for new equipment.
PM Browne sought to shed some light on the matter.
“I believe they have purchased a significant number of equipment and equipment may take another 60 to 90 days to get here. So, it has been delayed in that sense. It is not easy to acquire these specialized equipment,” PM Browne mentioned.
The new owners of the facility were undergoing equipment assessments after purchasing the Michael’s Mount building during the summer of 2024 for EC$13 million.
Delays then ensued again after the previous owner demanded to be paid a significant amount of money for what was reported to be “old equipment”.
The old equipment will be removed and specialized personnel will travel to Antigua to remove radioactive material.
The Minister of Health is presently in contact with the International Atomic Agency to assist.
The Centre closed its doors back in April 2023 but news broke that it would be reopened but under new management many cancer patients and members of the public expressed delight as it would be more convenient and less costly to seek treatment rather than having to travel.
In the meantime those of us who cannot afford to travel are continuing to seek other means and ways of getting the treatment we need to survive with the help of God
Its one thing after another. I pray that it reopens soon and people can seek the treatment they need without having to travel overseas where they gave no support system in most cases
