ROTARY CLUB OF ANTIGUA SUNDOWN ADVANCES PEACE INITIATIVES WITH PEACE POLE UNVEILING AND PEACE MARCH

3 March 2025 - 08:52

The Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown (RCAS) continues its commitment to fostering peace and nonviolence in schools and the broader community with two impactful events: the unveiling of a Peace Pole at Antigua Grammar School on Thursday, February 27, and the Peace March on Friday, February 28, 2025.

The Peace Pole unveiling was attended by District Governor (DG) Debbie Roopchand, Assistant Governor (AG) Jonah Ormond, and members of RCAS. Also present were students and members of the Interact Club of Antigua Grammar School & Antigua Girls’ High School, a unique club representing both institutions.

The installation of the Peace Pole stands as a powerful symbol of Rotary’s commitment to peacebuilding. It serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and understanding within the school community and beyond.

The following day, the Peace March brought together students from Antigua Girls’ High School, Antigua Grammar School, and T.N. Kirnon Primary School, all walking in solidarity to promote nonviolence and positive change.

Led by the Royal Police Marching Band, participants walked from T.N. Kirnon Primary, proceeding down Parliamentary Drive, Queen Elizabeth Highway, Independence Avenue, Long Street, and Federation Road before returning to their starting point.

Parents also joined the march, reinforcing the need for a community-wide effort to address violence and encourage peace. The initiative, organised and executed by RCAS, aims to expand in the coming years, with the hope that more schools will join the movement in 2026.

“The Peace Pole and Peace March are testaments to our club’s dedication to building a culture of peace among young people and within our communities,” said RCAS President Khari Lewis. “We believe that literacy, education, and advocacy all play a role in fostering peace, and we are committed to expanding these initiatives in the future.”

RCAS thanks all participants, school administrators, parents, and the Royal Police Marching Band for their support in making these events a success.

  2. I’m just hoping that this peace they are advocating is strong enough to reach international borders like Ukraine, Russia, Haiti, Africa and others.
