Former Supermarket Employee Imprisoned for Customs Fraud

A former Cost Pro Supermarket worker has been sentenced to a year and ten months in His Majesty’s Prison after being found guilty of an elaborate fraud involving forged Customs documents.

Edwin Ireland, who was responsible for coordinating container inspections with Customs officials, exploited weaknesses in the supermarket’s payment procedures to divert thousands of dollars for personal gain between 2019 and 2020.

The fraud came to light during a judge-alone trial that concluded with Ireland’s conviction on 25 counts of forgery and uttering by a servant on December 6, 2024.

The court heard that Ireland, who had exclusive responsibility for handling Customs duties payments, manipulated the system by falsifying official receipts and signatures.

He would then present these forged documents to the head cashier at Cost Pro, who released cash intended for Customs officers without verifying the authenticity of the signatures or dates.

Evidence presented during the trial revealed systematic failures in operational procedures at the supermarket. Ireland frequently conducted container inspections without Customs officers present, contrary to established protocols.

These procedural gaps allowed him to continue his fraudulent activities undetected over an extended period.

Justice Ann Marie Smith handed down the sentence following Ireland’s December conviction.
