Gunshots echoed through the streets of Salisbury early late evening as residents reacted to police intervention at the home of former United Workers Party (UPP) leader, Hector John.
The incident sparked outrage among community members, leading them to block portions of the E.O. Leblanc Highway, severely disrupting the flow of traffic.
Acting Chief of Police, Davidson Valerie, said in a statement to the media that the situation, that the actions taken by the residents were unlawful.
He stated, “I am informing persons from the community of Salisbury that their actions to block the portion of the E.O. Leblanc Highway at Salisbury today is unlawful. Those responsible for blocking the road must make every effort to immediately unblock the road, so as to allow free access to the people of Dominica.”
Valerie emphasized that the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force would employ “all necessary legal means” to ensure that the highway is cleared for use. He urged residents to refrain from escalating tensions and to cooperate with law enforcement to restore normalcy.
“The police will take all necessary legal action to have the road unblocked and remain accessible,” he warned. He also encouraged residents to avoid any unnecessary confrontations with police personnel.
The unfolding events have sparked discussions within the community about the balance between citizen rights and law enforcement authority, as emotions run high in the wake of the early morning raid.
The situation remains fluid, with both police and residents on heightened alert as calls for dialogue and de-escalation grow louder.
