The Antigua Barbuda Festivals Commission (ABFC) has officially endorsed a groundbreaking youth development program aimed at discovering and mentoring the next generation of Calypso and Soca artists in Antigua and Barbuda.

The Junior Calypso + Soca Stars Initiative, led by Peetron Thomas and Tyreke “Vicious” Lewis, will seek out young musical talent from primary and secondary schools across the nation. The program goes beyond traditional talent searches, offering comprehensive training in vocal coaching, songwriting, stage performance, and cultural expression.

“This initiative is about empowering young voices and instilling a deep love for our cultural art form,” said Peetron Thomas, a calypsonian, soca artist, and youth mentor. “Our goal is to find the next generation of Calypso and Soca stars and guide them from the classroom to the stage.”

ABFC Chairperson Ambassador Elizabeth Makhoul fully supports the program, praising its potential to preserve and promote the island’s musical heritage. The initiative aims to introduce at least 10 new young performers to Calypso and Soca competitions this year.

Key program components include:

School visits to identify talented young singers
Private vocal and performance training
Mentorship from established artists
Community performances
Preparation for Junior Calypso Monarch and Junior Soca Monarch competitions

Tyreke “Vicious” Lewis, an internationally recognized Soca artist, emphasized the program’s broader impact: “Music has the power to shape lives, build character, and connect us to our roots.”

As part of its commitment to the program’s success, the ABFC has made two significant appointments. Peetron Thomas has been officially appointed to the Junior Calypso Monarch subcommittee, while Tyreke “Vicious” Lewis has been appointed to the Junior Party Monarch subcommittee.

Parents interested in their children participating can call or WhatsApp (268) 775-1595 to learn more about this unique opportunity to nurture young musical talent.
