Barbuda Council vote set for today (file photo)
Today marks a significant turning point for the residents of Barbuda as they head to the polls to vote for five vacant seats on the Barbuda Council.
This election promises to be one of the most consequential in recent memory, with both the Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) fielding five candidates each, highlighting the stakes involved.
The BPM, which currently holds the majority on the Council, faces a formidable challenge from the ABLP, a party that has refrained from participating in the last two elections.
The outcome of today’s vote will determine whether the ABLP can penetrate the BPM’s firm grip on local governance, as both parties offer contrasting visions for the island’s future.
The ABLP aims to introduce developmental projects to Barbuda, while the BPM has shown reluctance towards such government-led initiatives.
The BPM candidates vying for seats include Nadia George, Wade Burton, Jacklin Frank, Melanie Beazer, and Nico Anthonio.
The ABLP’s roster features Bonnietha John, Arthur Nibbs, Bernard Christian, Mackiesha Desuza, and Orlando Morris.
Currently, the Barbuda Council consists of eleven seats, with the BPM holding control over four of those, alongside the Senatorial appointment made by the Council.
This means that even if the ABLP succeeds in today’s elections, it may not instantly alter the power dynamics; however, any electoral gains for the ABLP could indicate a shift in public sentiment and a potential weakening of BPM’s hold.
The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) has confirmed that 1,328 residents are eligible to vote.
Polling stations opened at 7:00 AM and will close at 6:00 PM, with all voting taking place at Holy Trinity School.
Let the Side-Show begin! Don’t know how much longer Antiguans will/can tolerate this continued waste of the nation’s resources. You can lead a horse to a refreshing pool of water but you cannot make it drink. There are so many other areas of nation-building that require the nation’s attention and resources than this wasteful every-two -year side-show.
To you it’s a side show but to those living it, it’s their future and their children’s future in avoiding a corrupt Ablp government
The Barbuda election always have the same outcome. Barbuda cannot be bought. Deal.with it!
And I eagerly anticipate the outcome
You have to know well who to choose to lead.
Backward barbudans at it again. They are just a different set of ppl. Generational ignorance
