Melford Nicholas, Minister of Utilities has made known the government’s plan to create water resiliency and balance throughout the country, in an effort to combat the shortage challenges that many residents frequently continue to face.
Speaking on Observer A.M, the Minister says that they are in talks with a Trinidadian company that is going to provide the government of Antigua and Barbuda with an ‘automated system’ to move the water around. This serves to supplant the current manual system, which the Minister says involves “technicians going out at 2 in the morning, and turning valves.”
Minister Nicholas says this system should be in operation by years end, as he highlights the importance of providing the technicians at APUA with the ability to “perform that type of switching seemlessly and automatically”.
The Minister points out the mechanics behind the water shortage problems, which includes the lack of enough storage facilities, even as Reverse Osmosis plants are being built and modified.
“People are getting water, people are not getting water at the time that they would like to get water”, says Minister Nicholas.
With this plan to improve the system responsible for maintaining water balance, the government hopes to implement a final fix to an issue that continues to affect the nation on a regular basis.

The move to an automated system is great, but I must ask how sustainable is it in the long run? The water shortages have been an issue for years and the Government has been feeding us lies. I can only believe this when I see it. Let’s not forget that maintenance and long-term planning are key.
He’s another story I’m sick and tired of hearing of. Like everything else I’ll reserve my excitement for when something actually does happen.
