APUA Responds to Concerns Over Utility Wiring in St. John’s

You can now listen to Antigua News articles!

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) is responding to a recent article published in Antigua.news that raises concerns about the state of utility wiring in St. John’s.

The authority clarified that a photo taken by Antigua.news accompanying the article, which suggested a potential safety hazard, does not depict exposed electrical conductors.

Instead, Corporate Communications Officer Anazette Reynolds says it shows a collection of telecommunications cables belonging to APUA and various service providers.

She tells Antigua.news that APUA has significantly improved its Telecommunications Business Unit, which recently completed a comprehensive upgrade from the outdated ASL copper network to a new, modern fibre broadband infrastructure.

While fibre services are now available island-wide, she explained that some customers are still dependent on the legacy copper network, which has slowed the complete removal of the older cables.

APUA assured the public that efforts are underway to remove any unused cables, emphasizing that this process is being managed carefully to avoid disrupting customers reliant on the older system.

The company also reiterated its commitment to maintaining the safety and quality of utility services for all customers.
