Work on the Booby Alley Housing Project, which is being funded by the People’s Republic of China, has been temporarily halted.

This decision follows a tragic incident on Wednesday, when a Chinese construction worker lost his life, reportedly due to electrocution.

Ambassador Clarence Pilgrim, Chairman of the Booby Alley Project Oversight Committee, announced the pause in construction during his visit to the site on Thursday.

He met with Tang Weiwei, a representative from the ZhongAn HuaLi Construction Group Co., Ltd., the company contracted by the Chinese Government for this project, as well as a representative from the Chinese Embassy in St. John’s.

After discussions, they agreed that work would stop temporarily to honor the memory of the 52-year-old worker who tragically died.

“We have decided to halt the project for three main reasons: to pay respects to the deceased worker, to facilitate the ongoing investigations, and to conduct a thorough review of the safety protocols currently in place on-site,” Pilgrim stated.

During this visit, Ambassador Pilgrim also offered heartfelt condolences to the company and its employees, reaffirming the government’s readiness to assist them during this difficult time.

I was saying that the Chinese have been so secretive about so many things you hardly hear about death among their nationals. When I heard a Chinese died I was like…Wait. These people actually die? Anyway jokes aside, I am very sad this happened. No one should die this way. Hopefully he didn’t suffer and he is in a better place now.

It is not about work, but about [rectification], setting up safer construction scaffolding, testing the anti-touch equipment of construction machinery (tower cranes), and re-arranging the cables. These are necessary steps that need to be taken after personal injury or death occurs on the construction site. I graduated as a construction engineer.
