A high-level delegation from the People’s Republic of China arrived in Antigua and Barbuda on Thursday. The delegation aims to enhance diplomatic and economic relations between China and Caribbean nations.

Guo Wenqi, Deputy Secretary in Charge of the Daily Work of the Central and State Organs Working Committee, leads the seven-member team.

During their visit, the delegation discussed issues with prominent government officials, including Acting Prime Minister Steadroy Benjamin, Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene, and Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle.

While the specifics of the talks have not been disclosed, there is a palpable sense of optimism regarding the future of cooperation between Antigua and Barbuda and China.

Ambassador Clarence Pilgrim, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the delegation at the VC Bird International Airport.

He underscored the importance of the existing strong ties between St. John’s and Beijing and expressed a commitment on behalf of the Antiguan people to foster these relationships further in the coming years.

As the Caribbean continues to navigate the complexities of international relations, this visit signals China’s ongoing interest in the region and its dedication to building partnerships that can benefit all parties involved.

The outcomes of these meetings may pave the way for future collaboration on various initiatives aimed at economic development and mutual growth.

Great to see Antigua building stronger international partnerships, this could open up a lot of opportunities for our economy. China has been a reliable partner for many developing nations. Let’s see what fruitful collaborations come from this. A job well done to the government for maintaining strong diplomatic ties. We need more of these visits to boost development. I can give them a 1 for this

Always good to welcome international friends, but let’s not sell our future for short-term gains. We should ensure that whatever partnerships we enter into actually benefit Antiguans first.
