Government in talk to build resort with an agricultural component (file photo)

Discussions have been ongoing with members of Global Capital on the possibility of constructing a US$1.2 billion resort that would include an agricultural component.

The firm and its parent company have engaged in investments in several countries in North America, Europe, and Africa, and are currently constructing a hotel in St. Lucia. There, the resort is eco-friendly and, on the seashore, but has large agricultural lands where more than 100 medicinal plants are being nurtured.

Utilizing the wisdom of the St. Lucian Traditional Medicine Men and trained Medical Doctors, the hotel will offer spas, rehabilitative treatment, and traditional medicines.

Cabinet Spokesperson Lionel Hurst gave some additional details on this proposed development.

“On Friday, the team went to visit several sites, one of them was Willoughby Bay. There was another site in which they were also invited to go visit. Again, these are all undeveloped land sites that would enable them to start almost from scratch. The whole idea is to develop a farm in connection with the hotel and they are going to seek out land that they think is useful. Could be up to 100 acres or more,” Hurst stated.

  1. So wait… We don’t have enough land for native born Antiguans to purchase but you have enough land to give to this ” resort”? MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!! We can cultivate our own daggone land and grow our own daggone medicinal plants!!! We’ve been doing it for eons and don’t need no doggone “resort with an agricultural component” to do it. That’s just a doggone cover. Get the heck outta here with that nonsense!

  5. Eco-friendly resorts are the future, but only if they actually respect the land and local traditions. Please let’s not sell out nature for luxury.

  6. If this brings long-term jobs and training for Antiguans and Barbudans, I’m all for it. Just make sure it’s not all imported labor. Big investment like this needs strong local oversight. Transparency is key so we don’t lose control over our own resources.
