MP for St Mary’s South Kelvin Shugy Simon
By Hon. Kelvin Simon, MP
Former National Basketball Player & School Counselor
As someone who has lived both on the court and in the classroom, I can say this with full conviction: sports are medicine for the mind.
Growing up, basketball wasn’t just a game for me—it was therapy. It was the place I went to clear my head, challenge myself, and find belonging.
The court gave me focus when life felt uncertain. It built my confidence, taught me discipline, and showed me the power of teamwork. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was protecting my mental health—one jump shot at a time.
Now, as a Member of Parliament and a former school counselor, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful sports can be for our youth. I’ve seen students walk into a gym heavy with stress, anger, or sadness—and leave with a sense of peace and purpose. I’ve seen young men and women find their voice, their strength, and their worth through sport.
The science backs it up: physical activity releases endorphins, reduces anxiety, and improves focus and sleep. But beyond that, sports offer structure, camaraderie, and identity. In a world where so many feel alone or overwhelmed, those three things are priceless.
As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, I encourage every parent, teacher, and community leader to prioritize movement—not just for the body, but for the brain. Whether it’s football, netball, cricket, or a simple morning walk, let’s make activity a daily habit and a shared joy.
Let us not forget: a healthy nation begins with healthy minds—and many of those minds can be healed and strengthened through sport.
Well said Mr. Simon. I share the same sentiments. I had my share of difficult situations so i know what part sport played.
Absolutely the power of a run swim or nature walk does the mid and body good – it is fuel for the entire body
You should have stayed in counselling and left the politics alone.
Mr irrelevant
Powerful message. We need more leaders who understand how mental and physical health go hand in hand. Thank you for your advocacy.
Totally agree, but let’s make sure we’re investing in school facilities and community programs so every child gets the chance.
