Suspicious fire at PM’s north London residence under investigation (Daily Mail)

Police are investigating a fire at Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s actual home in north London. The blaze at the PM’s property happened in the early hours of Monday 12 May.

The £2m town-house has been rented out ever since he was elected to the top position in the government back in July last year and as a consequence, moved into Number Ten Downing Street with his wife Victoria and children. It is unknown who has taken up temporary residence.

The entrance to the Kentish Town dwelling was damaged in the flames, but two fire engines quickly had the situation under control and it is understood that nobody was hurt.

Police set up a cordon which at one point stretched the whole length of the street, although that was shortened later in the day.

A statement from the Metropolitan Police said: “Officers attended the scene and it is subject to a live investigation so we cannot comment further.” The spokesman also declined to provide any further details when asked whether any members of Sir Keir’s family were in the house when the fire started.

Sir Keir thanked the emergency services for their work at the house outside of which he and his wife were filmed clapping for the NHS during lockdown, when Covid struck back in 2020.

One resident, 36-year-old Dan Nicholson, said there had been a 4×4 catch fire on the opposite side of the road just last week. “I called the police and shortly afterwards the fire brigade turned up. It was pretty dramatic and it feels like it might be related to the incident this morning; it seems too much of a coincidence.”

Another neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said he was awoken in the early hours of the morning to a loud bang that sounded like glass shattering, before adding: “There’s been lots of forensics outside all day, so it seems like they’re taking it very seriously.”

In an unrelated incident last year, three people were found guilty of public order offences after a pro-Palestinian demonstration outside the property.

There will be some who will make a connection with the PM’s unveiling of the government plan to crackdown on immigration rules, but that announcement was made several hours AFTER the fire broke out.

In the flagship Immigration White Paper the PM revealed there will be a ten-year wait for UK citizenship, as opposed to five years. There is also set to be a change to the language test and migrants will now require a university degree to gain a skilled worker visa. In addition every foreign citizen will need official digital ID to stay in the country.
