Air Services Agreement with Rwanda has been ratified

The Air Services Agreement between the governments of Antigua and Barbuda and the Republic of Rwanda was ratified in Parliament today.

The bilateral agreement which is governed by international law was signed on 23rd June 2022 in Rwanda but today, it was brought before the Lower House for ratification as a treaty.

Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez gave his support for the resolution sharing that a treaty like this one will aid in enhancing the aviation industry in the country.

Not only will it allow for persons to be trained but also offer jobs in a new market.

This will increase trade links as well.

“This reflects the government’s interest in broadening its relationship with Africa. Particularly, with Rwanda where discussions are ongoing for its national carrier, Rwanda Air Limited, for next year,” Fernandez added.

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle shared that while he is happy to see resolutions like these coming forward with the intention to strengthen ties with the motherland, he is apprehensive that the same scenario does not repeat itself with the Antigua Airways fiasco.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne in his rebuttal to Pringle touched on the Antigua Airways matter.

He reiterated that his administration was not aware of the nefarious actions happening behind the scenes but once made aware they dealt with the issue with the Africans even offering them a safe haven.

He once again denied any part in migrant smuggling.

Regarding the resolution, PM Browne gave his support and mentioned that his administration will be pushing forward in expanding trade in Africa.

“We have already begun talks with Ghana and other states as well,” Pm Browne added.

“We stay committed to strengthening and expanding our ties with Africa,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, similar agreements were ratified for Quatar and Germany.

An agreement for trade, economic and technical cooperations between CARICOM and Colombia was also ratified.

MP for Rural West Richard Lewis gave his support for the treaty.

“This is a perfect time for something like this as new tariffs are impacting us. It is time to expand and cooperate more with Central and South America. When these opportunities are afforded, we should exploit these opportunities in a timely manner as I see this resolution was signed some years ago but I am looking forward to Antigua and Barbuda working along more with Colombia.”

The resolution was signed in 1994.

  1. Sir, you need to first neuter the drug-rat Portuguese descendant/Race Rep BEFORE we think of extending a welcome mat to our African brothers and sisters. Let us therefore be forewarned and forearmed! Not every black Antiguan is a political donkey! We shall welcome our West African family as we welcome undeserving outsiders to our shores!

  2. It’s been almost three years so why is this only now coming before the House for ratification?
Why does everything have to be a drawn out process or a laid back one?
Anyway I hope this will beneficial to the both of us
