LETTER: Enough with the Hypocrisy | Minister Turner Responds to MP Kelvin Shugy Simon

Minister of Social and Urban Transformation, Rawdon Turner

The Prime Minister has made it absolutely clear: no heinous crimes are being pardoned. Yet the opposition has seized the opportunity to twist facts, spread fear, and mislead the public for political gain.

Their chief spokesperson is a convicted pedophile. That alone should disqualify them from speaking about justice or public safety.

But it gets worse. One of their sitting Members of Parliament is a convicted killer. He took the life of a young woman. They forgave him. They endorsed him. They ran him as a candidate and proudly sent him to Parliament. So let us not pretend they are concerned about accountability. Their record proves they are not.

The HAPPI programme is not a free pass. It is built on structure, supervision, hard labour, discipline, and skills training. It gives offenders a real chance at redemption, not through handouts, but through meaningful work. These individuals are learning trades, giving back to society, and earning a future through effort.

To paint this as some reckless giveaway is both dishonest and irresponsible. But dishonesty is nothing new for those who are only interested in political survival. If they cared about protecting the public, they would not be fronted by a convicted child molester. If they cared about victims, they would not elevate a man who killed a young woman.

This is not about justice. It is about power. It is about denying others the opportunity to change so they can score cheap political points and stay relevant.

This government is offering a responsible, transparent, and disciplined path to reform. That is what true leadership looks like. The people of this country can see through the noise. They know who is building solutions and who is spreading fear. They know the difference between real progress and hollow rhetoric.

  1. What about being TRUE and ABOVE SUSPICION, Mr. Minister of Social and Urban Transformation, by Publishing EXACTLY For What CRIME that Each Prisoner on the HAPI PROJECT (or Programme) Had Been Imprisoned; AND THE AMOUNT OF TIME SERVED Of the Sentences Required Of Each of these Prisoners by The Courts Of 🇦🇬

THAT Should NOT BE TOO DIFFICULT for Political LEADERS who CLAIM To be TRANSPARENT, DISCIPLINED and RESPONSIBLE …..

………. But if You, as Minister of Social and Urban TRANSFORMATION, Cannot do THIS, Then Perhaps make some EFFORT to Penalize whoever made Public Certain CRIMES that were committed by Some Of The Prisoners on the HAPI PROJECT (or Programme)!!!!

……. This Mr. Minister Turner is Being RESPONSIBLE, TRANSPARENT AND DISCIPLINED!!!

…….. The PUBLIC Of 🇦🇬 Expects Nothing LESS From UPSTANDING MEN Such as YOU and THE PRIME MINISTER OF THIS 🇦🇬 ……

…….. We, The Public, are awaiting (Dare I say with Fear & Trembling for THE GOOD of OUR NATION) Your Response Sir ……..

  4. Mr Turner it seems like you cannot take pressure. This is politics. It is a political thing.

  5. There comes a time when leadership means standing firm in the face of lies. That time is now. The opposition is playing a dangerous game, fueling mistrust and spinning reform into fearmongering. Yet they themselves are the architects of enabling serious offenders. This is not leadership; it’s desperation. HAPPI gives people a way forward with structure and discipline, and that’s a good thing. It’s time we focus on solutions, not scare tactics.

    • Turner I do believe in second chances for all… I am desirous though of understanding what are the desired outcome and how it will be measured. As if done properly, this reformation process can aide in offering 1st time offenders a clear rehabilitation path. I don’t do politics but I do community development.

      • any sexual crime or assault committed against females or children should not be pardoned just like that if at all . Remember the victims are still out there suffering for life they will never be pardoned

  6. Wasting your time in responding to that man. Turner, I know you have better things to do! UPP does nothing but try to ruin the lives of people! and they try every means of attacking the current government, even as far as what sound as a good initiative, they bring claims so the public will feel a way about it! Thats what happen when you’re trying to entire an arena you don’t belong in

  7. Shugy got something to talk about because they’re in-house fighting is not producing any fruit. They cannot discuss national projects because they see work. Shugy stick to what you know. Braffing.

    • I believe that Shugy has issues other than with the Governments policy. SHUGY you are not the leader of the opposition. Where is he in all of this? Why have we not heard anything from him at all? If the party has an issue with a matter then the leader needs to speak out. Let it be a collective voice. Not one half drunk braffing sexologist coming out with a statement as an MP. This is why you guys are so disorganized. No order. No pattern. Stop trying to be leader when the only thing you can lead is a crowd to party. I’m tired with it all. Honestly.

  8. Finally, someone calls out the opposition for their constant grandstanding. Minister Turner is right, the hypocrisy is glaring.

  9. From the onset, I wanted to know the definition of heinous crimes and which specicific crimes are considered heinous. I was (and still am) adamant that pedophiles and those convicted of violence against women, the elderly, and children should be made to serve their entire sentences. Commutation of sentences is a great idea, in my humble opinion, if the above stipulations are met.

  10. If this is all Turner has to say about something every citizen should be concerned about then shame on him!!
Its not about calling out those who has done wrong, is Turner suggesting he is an ángel?
Its about ensuring there is proper system in place to ensure citizens are safe from those who has committed the worse crimes and sentenced accordingly.
