The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) has made headlines for its quick and effective response to a serious medical emergency involving a local diver.
Akeam Bretney, a 37-year-old certified diver, was successfully treated for decompression sickness—commonly referred to as “the bends”—after being brought to the hospital.
Thanks to the advanced hyperbaric chamber facility at SLBMC, Akeam received critical care without needing to travel far from home.
Following the treatment, he has made a full recovery and was seen giving a peace sign in a photo, symbolizing his strength and resilience during this challenging time.
Decompression sickness occurs when dissolved gases form bubbles in the bloodstream, often as a result of a rapid ascent from deep waters.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is recognized as the gold standard for treating this condition, as it employs pressurized oxygen to alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
In an official statement, SLBMC expressed profound gratitude to the Calvin Ayre Foundation for their generous donation of the hyperbaric chamber, highlighting how this vital piece of equipment enabled the life-saving treatment.
“Their support has been a powerful force for good—strengthening our capacity to save lives and care for you and your family when it matters most,” the SLBMC statement remarked.
The hospital’s commitment to providing advanced medical care like this has significant implications for the local community.
SLBMC proudly offers this level of care right here in Antigua and Barbuda, illustrating their dedication to public health.
Special acknowledgment was given to Dr. Bienvenido Bridge, the physician who led the care team during this critical intervention, ensuring Akeam’s safe return to health.who led the care team.
So happy to hear Akeam is doing well! Big up to the doctors and SLBMC team for their quick response. This shows how critical proper equipment is.

So relieved to hear a positive outcome. It’s easy to take these life-saving services for granted until you hear about them in action. Well done, SLBMC!
