Second Reading Scheduled for Bill Aiming to Curb Sugary Drink Consumption

The Cabinet has announced that the Second Reading of the Sugary Beverages Act will take place during the upcoming session of Parliament, underscoring the government’s dedication to enhancing public health and addressing non-communicable diseases.

This legislation aims to decrease sugar consumption, especially among the youth, as part of a broader strategy to prevent diabetes, heart disease, and other lifestyle-related health issues.

During discussions, it was concerning to see the high number of cavities found in young people despite advances in technology and treatment options.

Maurice Merchant, Director General of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, stated that the improvements in dental care make this program easier to implement.

“Parents play a crucial role in taking steps to protect their children’s dental health. Once children reach a certain age, the teeth they have are the only ones they will get, and if properly cared for, they can last a lifetime,” Merchant emphasized remarked.
