The National Office for Disaster Services (NODS) has partnered with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) to conduct a crucial workshop series focusing on Disaster Risk Knowledge, Early Warning, Early Action, and Inclusivity.

This initiative kicked off with a virtual session last week and culminated in a two-day event held at the Trade Winds Hotel.

Part of the broader Early Warnings for All Initiative, the workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from various sectors, including representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, the Department of Gender Affairs, the Ministry of Social Transformation, the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Persons with Disabilities, and the Antigua Barbuda Met Service, among others.

Sessions were dedicated to enhancing data collection and management practices critical to Disaster Risk Reduction, evaluating damage and loss, and ensuring that vulnerable populations are prioritized in disaster preparedness and response efforts.

Mario Salgado Galvez, Risk Knowledge Officer at UNDRR, served as the main facilitator, guiding participants through best practices in disaster risk management.

Sherrod James, Director of NODS, highlighted recent disasters in Antigua and Barbuda to illustrate both the shortcomings in the current system and successful initiatives, such as the campaign aimed at keeping drains and natural waterways clear of debris to reduce flooding risks.

Mali Barnes, a Technical Consultant with UNDRR, emphasized the importance of inclusivity for the success of the Early Warnings for All Initiative, stating, “We strive to ensure that no one is left behind and everyone is included.”

This collaborative effort aims to strengthen community resilience and promote proactive measures in disaster management across Antigua and Barbuda

  1. Glad to see that the voices of persons with disabilities are included. Disasters don’t discriminate, so our responses shouldn’t either.

  2. Workshops are great, but will this actually lead to better readiness on the ground? Communities need real action, not just meetings.
