The Fourth Annual AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum commenced today, uniting leaders and representatives from African and Caribbean nations to explore deeper economic connections and trade partnerships.
Hosted in St. George’s, the forum is a pivotal gathering aimed at embracing shared histories and aspirations for mutual growth.
The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission Selma Malika Haddadi delivered the opening remarks, expressing gratitude to the Government of Grenada and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) for their leadership and hospitality.
“This forum comes at a defining moment in history,” he stated, highlighting the importance of collaboration amid shifting global economic dynamics.
Key themes of the forum were underscored by the Deputy Chairperson, starting with a call for the establishment of an Africa-Caribbean Free Trade Area. He emphasized this initiative as a strategic imperative that could significantly enhance trade and reduce barriers, ultimately transforming economic engagement between the two regions.

The Deputy Chairperson also announced the need to bolster the Africa-Caribbean Business Council, which aims to facilitate connections between private sectors and foster sustainable economic initiatives. “We must empower businesses to form lasting partnerships that drive growth,” she remarked.
Another critical focus area is the creative economy, which holds immense potential for economic resilience.
The Deputy Chairperson urged participants to promote cultural exchanges and joint ventures in creative fields, correcting the historical narrative often distorted by outside perspectives. “Our cultural and creative industries are not just sources of pride; they are powerful engines of growth,” she noted.
Efforts to strengthen air and maritime connectivity were also outlined as essential for stimulating trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges. “We must ensure that policies support the operationalization of regular flights and shipping routes to bridge our regions effectively,” she added.
With the gathering setting a tone of optimism and collaboration, the forum is not just a discussion platform but a clarion call for action. Distinguished delegates, business leaders, and policymakers are expected to engage in constructive dialogues that will pave the way for sustainable economic partnerships.
