A man died falling from the top tier of Wembley Stadium at the end of the latest Oasis concert on their reunion tour (NME)
A man in his 40’s has died after falling from the top tier of Wembley Stadium at the end of an Oasis concert. Police and medics responded immediately, but the unnamed individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
The national stadium has a seating capacity of 90,000 spread across three tiers, with the highest of the stands being some 50 metres above the ground. The man was understood to have been located in Upper Tier 511 and appears to have fallen at a point when the audience were applauding the band and fireworks were being let off at the conclusion of the show.
Several witnesses have come forward to speak of the tragic incident which seems to have occurred just as people were trying to leave. One fan who withheld their name, described how she was sitting in a lower tier, directly below from where the man fell. She said she had witnessed paramedics trying to revive the man. “I was directly underneath in section 211. At first glance I thought it was a coat falling from the above tier, but then I looked and saw the bloke on the concrete. It was horrific to see.”
Another commented how dangerous the seating arrangements were, saying: “Walking down the steps to our seats I thought, ‘It wouldn’t take much to slip and fall’.” That was backed up by many others who explained that they feared losing their footing due to the “amount of beer thrown and drinks spilt” with one person describing it as being “like an ice rink”.
Police have appealing for video footage which they say: “As the stadium was busy we believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage.” They are expected to inform the Health and Safety Executive, which are likely to launch a probe into the death.
A Wembley Stadium spokesperson said: “a concertgoer was found with injuries consistent with a fall and despite the best efforts of medics in attendance, the fan very sadly died. Our thoughts go out to his family, who have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers.”
Oasis said in a statement they were “shocked and saddened” to hear of the death of a fan. They added: “Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.” Brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher are part way through their reunion tour, marking the end of an almost 16-year split.
The band crashed ticket sites when they announced they were making a comeback last year, as more than 14 million fans frantically tried to secure a seat at one of the gigs. This latest concert was part of seven to be held at Wembley Stadium.
The band will next perform three shows in Edinburgh later this month, before moving across to Ireland, on to Canada, the US and Mexico, before returning to Wembley again for two more gigs at the end of September.
