Sir Andy Roberts of Antigua and Barbuda was honored last night with Vincentian citizenship alongside eleven other living legends from the iconic 1975 West Indies Cricket team.

The ceremony took place at the Amos Vale playing field and included notable figures such as Sir Clive Lloyd, His Excellency Deryck Murray, Alvin Kallicharran, Collis King, Bernard Julien, and Sir Gordon Greenidge.

Former West Indies and Vincentian cricketers Winston Davis and Michael Findlay were also recognized during the event. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1975 team’s victorious win, special stamps were unveiled.

St. Vincent Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves emphasized that citizenship is the highest honor in the land, highlighting the deep respect and affection Vincentians hold for these cricket legends.

During their four-day stay in St. Vincent for the Emancipation Cricket Festival, the legends engaged with young cricketers, government officials, and various organizations, participating in discussions about cricket’s role as a public good.

They expressed their concerns regarding the recent struggles of West Indies cricket and committed to collaborating with regional governments and Cricket West Indies to restore the region’s former glory in the sport.

  1. What a fitting and well-deserved honor for our national hero, Sir Andy Roberts. As the first Antiguan to play Test cricket, he paved the way for so many. To see him recognized alongside his 1975 World Cup teammates is a beautiful tribute to a golden era and a powerful reminder of our cricketing legacy.

  4. Personally I do not think Andy is given the credit he deserves in his own country.
Why wasn’t the stadium named after both Andy and Viv?
Andy is the one who open the floodgates for the small island cricketers to get into WI cricket.
In these island it was always about whether a person was from the countryside or the capital.
